Teenagers Paul Baumer and his friends Albert and Muller volunteer to join the German army. Soon their patriotic feelings disappear once they are confronted with the brutal reality of life at the front. Paul's prejudices about the enemy and the rights and wrongs of the conflict soon crumble. But during the armistice countdown, Paul must keep fighting to the end, with no other goal than to fulfil the top men's desire to end the war in a German offensive.
